  • Job Title: PhD Cell Biologist – Stem Cell Research & Processing

    Position Overview:

    We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated PhD-level Cell Biologist with expertise in stem cell biology, specifically focusing on human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). The successful candidate will join our dynamic research team and play an integral role in advancing Apeiron’s cell therapy programs. In addition to technical expertise, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to create novel solutions in the field of cellular therapy and possess the operational precision to run a cellular laboratory flawlessly.

    Responsibilities

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Conduct and oversee the xeno-free culturing and expansion of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs).

    • Supervise and manage cryobanking activities, ensuring best practices for cell cryopreservation, storage, and re-animation.

    • Perform regular sterility checks using advanced methodologies including qPCR to maintain the highest standards of cell culture purity and safety.

    • Support the implementation and advancement of novel culturing techniques involving additional stem cell lines, 2D culturing methodologies, and microvesicle isolation and characterization.

    • Develop innovative therapeutic and laboratory methodologies in cellular therapy.

    • Lead optimization of laboratory workflow and processes to enhance efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance.

    • Provide training and guidance to technical staff in best laboratory practices and cell culture techniques.

    • Maintain detailed and accurate documentation in compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.

    • Independently operate, oversee, and troubleshoot cellular laboratory systems with precision and compliance.

    Secondary Responsibilities

    • Contribute actively to the design and establishment of our new state-of-the-art laboratory facility, ensuring optimized conditions for cell culture and processing.

    • Assist in preparation and submission of documents required for Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes and Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to regulatory bodies.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedical Sciences, or closely related field.

    • Demonstrable experience in human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) culturing, processing, and expansion in xeno-free conditions.

    • Extensive hands-on experience with cryopreservation techniques, including cryofreezing protocols and successful re-animation of cells.

    • Strong background in regulatory processes including familiarity with IRB documentation and IND submissions.

    • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate scientific findings clearly.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with FDA regulatory environment pertaining to cellular therapies and regenerative medicine.

    • Prior experience working with additional stem cell types, including adipose-derived MSCs, and familiarity with isolation and characterization of microvesicles/exosomes.

    • Proficiency with advanced sterility testing methodologies including quantitative PCR (qPCR).

    • Proficiency with cell phenotyping and quantification via Flow Cytometry.

    • Prior experience optimizing laboratory protocols and workflows, particularly in cleanroom environments and cGMP compliance.

    • Previous experience in establishing or transitioning to new laboratory facilities.

Located in the innovation driven community of Boulder Colorado, our multidisciplinary research supports cutting-edge biologic therapies, focusing on stem cell applications and personalized immunotherapies. We are building a state-of-the-art AI-driven informatics infrastructure to accelerate discovery and translational outcomes and optimize data integrity, analysis, and clinical insight generation.

     

    Position Overview

    We seek an experienced AI Engineer with a strong foundation in machine learning and full-stack system design to join our translational research team. Demonstrated ability to navigate the complexities of biomedical data heterogeneity and a strong commitment to ethical data handling and privacy is paramount to success in this role. Expertise in laboratory science and/or cell therapy is highly desired. This role is central to the design, deployment, and scaling of secure and intelligent platforms for managing and analyzing large, multimodal datasets. Our laboratory and clinical sources include:

     

    • Flow cytometry (FCS format)

    • PCR and qPCR instruments

    • Genomic and epigenetic sequencing

    • High-dimensional imaging modalities (e.g., 3D microscopy)

    • Cellular therapy product records and metadata

     

    Key Responsibilities

    • Applied AI & Tooling

      • Design and deploy machine learning models to extract insights from structured and unstructured scientific data.

      • Create intuitive tools, APIs, and dashboards for researchers and technical staff to interact with data and models.

      • Collaborate with domain experts to translate their needs into efficient, ML-ready data workflows.

      • Apply machine learning to improve operational processes, quality control, and research decision-making.

    • Visualization & User Experience

      • Build interactive visualizations and interfaces that help surface model outputs and key insights to non-technical users.

      • Develop user-centric applications that connect raw and processed data to intuitive visual stories.

    • Data Systems & Governance

      • Build and maintain scalable, secure pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and model training.

      • Design and manage AI training datasets and model repositories with appropriate metadata and lineage

      • Develop systems that support reproducibility, auditability, and versioning of datasets and model artifacts.

      • Oversee data quality, access control, and compliance standards for internal and external sharing.

      • Ensure systems support seamless collaboration between data scientists, engineers, and research staff.

     

     

     Desired Qualifications

    • Education & Experience:

      • PhD or MS in AI, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.

        • Bachelor’s degree considered with appropriate job-specific experience.

      • 3+ years of post-graduation experience in applied AI/ML, preferably in a lab or clinical research setting.

     

    • Technical Skills:

      • Snowflake, S3, HDF5

      • Expertise in Python (PyTorch, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Biopython), R, and SQL

      • Cloud platform familiarity (e.g., AWS, GCP, Docker, CI/CD pipelines)

      • Understanding of modern security architectures

      • High knowledge of HIPAA-compliant data workflows

      • Experience with the REDCap environment is a plus

    • Interdisciplinary Aptitude

      • Ability to work closely with laboratory and clinical researchers to translate needs into scalable AI systems.

      • Strong understanding of biomedical data heterogeneity and ethical data handling.

      • Comfort managing uncertainty and rapidly iterating on novel research hypotheses.
